Workshops

Note: All workshops will be led by both of the Scratch performers (in not two groups parallely). That’s a double dose of improv knowledge!

Scratch Workshop

This workshop will focus on going over and learning the Scratch format including:

  • Character objectives and their relationship to long form storytelling
  • Cut away techniques
  • An introduction to physical comedy
  • The three act structure
  • The montage
  • Playing multiple characters in a scene (character switching)

This workshop is a perfect companion to booking the Scratch show as it gives improvisers a look at the methods behind the spectacle. Often after seeing the show folks are excited at having seen new styles and techniques, and they are eager to try them out themselves. This workshop offers the opportunity to do just that, under the guidance of the very artists who developed them.

General Workshop

This workshop will focus on strengthening the skills common to both short and long form improv, including:

  • Character work: creating layered, original characters
  • Scene work: objectives, story arcs, silent tension
  • Embracing mistakes
  • Moving towards danger
  • Finding comedy through drama

This workshop will be different for each group taught, as we will be adapting to each group’s specific needs. This is the ideal opportunity to have your show critiqued and refined by two of Canada’s most established and experienced improvisers. Or equally it is a chance to study the Canadian style of improv performance which emphasizes an equal blend of emotional truth and outrageous comedy.
